The West Nile region where Muni University is located occupies a distinctive place in Uganda’s development landscape. The region encompasses twelve districts, namely Adjumani, Arua, Koboko, Madi-Okollo, Maracha, Moyo, Nebbi, Obongi, Pakwach, Terego, Yumbe and Zombo. The region boasts of a diverse ethnic makeup and varying agroecological settings. The West Nile region experiences particularly high incidences of poverty, standing at 59.1%, which is above the national average according to the Uganda National Household Survey of 2022. Nevertheless, the region’s strategic geographical location, near international borders including the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan, presents promising opportunities for cross-border trade and regional economic integration. The region faces the challenge of an influx of refugees from South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo, who make up close to 60% of the 1.5 million refugee population in Uganda. This influx has intensified the demand for already strained resources, including land and water for agriculture, further exacerbating various environmental impacts.
